ABBIE AGAINST THE STORM, Marcia Vaughan
1 ABBIE AGAINST THE STORM Marcia Vaughan
Beyond Words Publishing 1999 1582700079
 Hardcover
VERY GOOD  Minor edgewear on dustjacket Bill Farnsworth
n this true story, 14-year-old Abbie Burgess has to tend the lighthouse while her father is away. When the worst storm in 200 years breaks out, Abbie must keep the lights burning. Through her own resourcefulness, she manages to protect both the incoming ships and her own family. Abbie is a magnificently brave teen-age girl who struggles against her own fear and self-doubt as well as struggling with the raging forces of nature. Vaughan paints wonderful word pictures with sound and visual imagery. Her use of words suggest how spoken language may have sounded in the mid-nineteenth century. Bill Farnsworth's gorgeous illustrations are equally dramatic and embody the strong spirit of Abby, the wildness of the sea, and the individuality of each character. This is a wonderful book for young readers. It will introduce them to a different era through the eyes of a woman who lived over a century ago. The epilogue that gives historical facts about the real Abby is an excellent addition to the story and makes it resonate with even more meaning.

Based on a true encounter, this tells the story of a small boy named Camille who befriends the troubled painter Vincent van Gogh when he comes to live in a village in the Dutch countryside. Camille is heartbroken because most of the local people jeer at the artist, who never sells a picture. Some of Anholt's illustrations are based on famous van Gogh scenes (the view of his bedroom, for example); Anholt also includes reproductions of actual paintings, such as van Gogh's Sunflowers, and portraits of Camille and his family. This book will show children how art transforms ordinary things.

Biologist Harrison has often used whimsical poetry to capture the imaginations of children interested in science. There's no poetry in this Earthworks picture book about caves, but Harrison's simple, fluid language is winning all the same. When Millicent the cow strays from the shade, Farmer Howe wonders what has drawn her away from familiar comforts. He discovers that underground breezes from caves beneath his pasture are keeping his cows cool. Then the science kicks in, as Harrison describes caves formation and the underground ecosystems that thrive in the cool dark. The picture, filled with surprising movement, nicely picture both the "story" and the science. An author's note and a bibliography of further readings are appended. It's science with grace, sure to please and inform.

In a simple, compelling text, Dewey invites readers to share three of her personal experiences with rattlesnakes in her native New Mexico. The first is a traumatic, life-threatening episode involving a snakebite at the age of nine. The second describes her awe at a Hopi rain dance, watching the dancers handle snakes, including rattlers, with seeming impunity. The third, years later, depicts her wonder at observing two male rattlers jousting for dominance. These engrossing memories are embroidered with informative boxes of scientific facts and folklore about rattlesnakes, and the whole is handsomely enriched by Dewey's elegant, exquisitely detailed pencil illustrations and scientific diagrams.

On May 10, 1869, the final spike in North America's first transcontinental railroad was driven home at Promontory Summit, Utah. In the race to reach the Summit, Central Pacific crews had to blast through mountains, brave avalanches, and sweat through the dessert. In time they had become so efficient, well organized, and hardy that their boss, Charles Crocker, staked $10,000 on their ability to lay a world record ten miles of track in one day. Illustrated with Fraser's carefully researched, evocative paintings, here is the story of a great American adventure. Come Climb Aboard!

Tomás is a son of migrant workers. Every summer he and his family follow the crops north from Texas to Iowa, spending long, arduous days in the fields. At night they gather around to hear Grandfather's wonderful stories. But before long, Tomás knows all the stories by heart. "There are more stories in the library," Papa Grande tells him. The very next day, Tomás meets the library lady and a whole new world opens up for him. Based on the true story of the Mexican-American author and educator Tomás Rivera, a child of migrant workers who went on to become the first minority Chancellor in the University of California system, this inspirational story suggests what libraries--and education--can make possible. Raul Colón's warm, expressive paintings perfectly interweave the harsh realities of Tomás's life, the joyful imaginings he finds in books, and his special relationships with a wise grandfather and a caring librarian.
