 Hardcover
VERY GOOD - small taped spot on spine No dustjacket
 Shane W. Evans
The annual summer visit to the country home of the Old Ones, the uncles and aunts who raised Daddy, brings joy and good times. The story captures all of the elements of a typical reunion--the abundant good food, the old folks reminiscing, the children playing--but it avoids excessive detail that will bore young story listeners. Johnson has a way of saying so much, with so few words, that children are likely to enjoy this story.

Biologist Harrison has often used whimsical poetry to capture the imaginations of children interested in science. There's no poetry in this Earthworks picture book about caves, but Harrison's simple, fluid language is winning all the same. When Millicent the cow strays from the shade, Farmer Howe wonders what has drawn her away from familiar comforts. He discovers that underground breezes from caves beneath his pasture are keeping his cows cool. Then the science kicks in, as Harrison describes caves formation and the underground ecosystems that thrive in the cool dark. The picture, filled with surprising movement, nicely picture both the "story" and the science. An author's note and a bibliography of further readings are appended. It's science with grace, sure to please and inform.

18 DAVID GOES TO SCHOOL David Shannon
Scholastic
 1999
 0590480871 Hardcover
VERY GOOD - inscription inside front cover
 Dustjacket in fine shape
David, the out-of-control monster-child from David Shannon's Caldecott Honor Book No, David! is back... and ready to disrupt the class. Shannon remembers the word "no" all too clearly from his childhood, and, as he says in his introduction, "It seems that kids haven't changed much over the years, and neither have school rules, some of which date back even further than the invention of sneakers." In David Goes to School, young David shows up late to class, goes wacko at the blackboard, chews gum in class, yells answers out of turn, pulls pigtails, stares out the window, cuts in line, has a food fight ("I don't care who started it!" says the teacher), lingers at recess, and draws on his desk. Colorful, hilarious, childlike illustrations examine our strangely appealing demon-boy at eye level, which is especially disgusting as David stretches an enormous mass of bubble gum from his pointy-toothed maw. After an intense day of exuberant misbehaving, however, he stays after school and washes all the desks until they sparkle. The day ends with a gold star and a pat on the head... something that any child (or adult) would find satisfying.

"This is one of the best children's books I've come across! The subject of skeletons can be scary to a child; but here, it's presented with such delightful pictures and silly text, my 4 year-old niece "forgot" to be afraid. It's a perfect length to hold a child's interest through to the end. You can't help but cheer on Boogie Bones, as he "trips the light fantastic" at the dance. And when his true identity is revealed, it's a child who shows the townspeople there's nothing to fear. Your own children can relate to this, and maybe even conquer some of their own fears. All in all, a great book for kids of any age!"

Daniel and his mother live in Los Angeles when the riots break out. Daniel watches the evil things people are doing outside his window and learns that they do it because they don't like the people who look or sound different from themselves. When a fire threatens his apartment building, Daniel and his mother must evacuate along with the rest of the tenants and go to a shelter for the night. Daniel is frantically searching for his beloved cat and questioning all his neighbors on her location. Finally, a firefighter brings his cat in along with Mrs. Kim's cat. Daniel thinks it is odd that the two of them were found together because he thought they despised each other. Then he realizes they now get along because they finally got to know each other. His realization brings about a revelation among his neighbors who then become friendly with one another, despite their skin tone or language.

In a simple, compelling text, Dewey invites readers to share three of her personal experiences with rattlesnakes in her native New Mexico. The first is a traumatic, life-threatening episode involving a snakebite at the age of nine. The second describes her awe at a Hopi rain dance, watching the dancers handle snakes, including rattlers, with seeming impunity. The third, years later, depicts her wonder at observing two male rattlers jousting for dominance. These engrossing memories are embroidered with informative boxes of scientific facts and folklore about rattlesnakes, and the whole is handsomely enriched by Dewey's elegant, exquisitely detailed pencil illustrations and scientific diagrams.

Bobby!" ("Someone's calling Bobby. I'm not Bobby.") Jules Feiffer (I Lost My Bear, Bark, George!) perfectly captures a short flight of the imagination that just about every child has taken--an adult may be calling your name, may have called it 50 times, but it doesn't matter because you're pretending to be something else. In freewheeling, almost scrawled illustrations, Bobby blots out those parental demands by pretending to be a lion, a dinosaur, a monster, and more. But eventually the lion gets hungry and disguises itself as Bobby to go home for a snack.

Keith Graves' wacky illustrations and laugh-out-loud text will tickle the funny bone and leave readers clamoring for an encore.

Based on a true encounter, this tells the story of a small boy named Camille who befriends the troubled painter Vincent van Gogh when he comes to live in a village in the Dutch countryside. Camille is heartbroken because most of the local people jeer at the artist, who never sells a picture. Some of Anholt's illustrations are based on famous van Gogh scenes (the view of his bedroom, for example); Anholt also includes reproductions of actual paintings, such as van Gogh's Sunflowers, and portraits of Camille and his family. This book will show children how art transforms ordinary things.

47 ABBIE AGAINST THE STORM Marcia Vaughan
Beyond Words Publishing 1999 1582700079
 Hardcover
VERY GOOD  Minor edgewear on dustjacket Bill Farnsworth
n this true story, 14-year-old Abbie Burgess has to tend the lighthouse while her father is away. When the worst storm in 200 years breaks out, Abbie must keep the lights burning. Through her own resourcefulness, she manages to protect both the incoming ships and her own family. Abbie is a magnificently brave teen-age girl who struggles against her own fear and self-doubt as well as struggling with the raging forces of nature. Vaughan paints wonderful word pictures with sound and visual imagery. Her use of words suggest how spoken language may have sounded in the mid-nineteenth century. Bill Farnsworth's gorgeous illustrations are equally dramatic and embody the strong spirit of Abby, the wildness of the sea, and the individuality of each character. This is a wonderful book for young readers. It will introduce them to a different era through the eyes of a woman who lived over a century ago. The epilogue that gives historical facts about the real Abby is an excellent addition to the story and makes it resonate with even more meaning.

On May 10, 1869, the final spike in North America's first transcontinental railroad was driven home at Promontory Summit, Utah. In the race to reach the Summit, Central Pacific crews had to blast through mountains, brave avalanches, and sweat through the dessert. In time they had become so efficient, well organized, and hardy that their boss, Charles Crocker, staked $10,000 on their ability to lay a world record ten miles of track in one day. Illustrated with Fraser's carefully researched, evocative paintings, here is the story of a great American adventure. Come Climb Aboard!

 Raul Colon

Tomás is a son of migrant workers. Every summer he and his family follow the crops north from Texas to Iowa, spending long, arduous days in the fields. At night they gather around to hear Grandfather's wonderful stories. But before long, Tomás knows all the stories by heart. "There are more stories in the library," Papa Grande tells him. The very next day, Tomás meets the library lady and a whole new world opens up for him. Based on the true story of the Mexican-American author and educator Tomás Rivera, a child of migrant workers who went on to become the first minority Chancellor in the University of California system, this inspirational story suggests what libraries--and education--can make possible. Raul Colón's warm, expressive paintings perfectly interweave the harsh realities of Tomás's life, the joyful imaginings he finds in books, and his special relationships with a wise grandfather and a caring librarian.

57 SWEET DREAMS DOUGLAS Regan Dunnick
2003
 096324213x
 Hardcover
VERY GOOD DJ has one spot on back side
Sweet Dreams Douglas is a wonderful children's book about a dog-child named Douglas who doesn't want to go to bed and doesn't think he knows how to dream. Perfectly suited for ages 3-7, Sweet Dreams Douglas bridges the tender gap between the fun of wide awake play and the joy of deep asleep dreams. Children who fear bedtime will be especially reassured and empowered by its humourous illustrations in inviting, soft yet vibrant colors, skillfully executed by author/artist Regan Dunnick. In the story, Douglas goes on a dreamquest adventure, asking a fantastic variety of animal friends what they dream. In an effort to find his own dreaming ability, Douglas tries "on' all their dreams and finds that nothing quite fits him. Finally one of his dream companions tells him his answer - "Just dream, little one." Then he really begins to explore some dreams of his own. When Douglas wakes up, he is proud of his dreaming accomplishment, and coincidentally all the animal characters in his dream are found in toys and pets and pictures in his room around him.

"On Saturday morning, the rain came down. It made the chickens squawk." But that's only the beginning. Before the sun comes out again, an entire neighborhood is in a crabby uproar. The owner of the beauty parlor squabbles with the barber, who argues with the painter, who has just accidentally bonked the barber in the head with his paint can. Then the baker unintentionally pokes the pizza man in the nose with his umbrella, and they start quarreling. Soon, "the whole block was honking, yelling, bickering, and barking." There's no end in sight... until the rain stops, the sun comes out, the air smells fresh and sweet, and a rainbow appears. Before they know it, the bickerers are helping each other clean up the mess caused by the ruckus, and everyone's smiling again.

Dennis has been seeing ghosts, lots of ghosts, ever since the death of his father. Most of the ghosts come and go, but then Dennis receives a visit from the ghost of his Uncle Arvie. Uncle Arvie has lots of plans for Dennis: he needs his help to find a lost love letter, finish a painting, and dig up a buried treasure for Dennis's Aunt Julia, who is Arvie's widow. Dennis loves having his uncle around again, but there’s still one ghost he’s longing to see. Perhaps on the next ghost wind . . . Master storyteller Sharon Creech has woven a wonderfully funny, romantic tale. Arvie’s eccentric antics and wonderful word play keep the reader laughing, but at its tender heart, the story reveals the holes left in our lives when we lose the ones we love.

 Nigel McMullen

Twitchy Witch wants to go to a Monster Party where no witches are allowed, so she conjures up Wonderpants the Wizard to transform her into a gruesome troll. Add some final touches at the Ugly Parlor and she's ready to party. However, like all magic spells, there is a caveat. Wonderpants warns: "...hide your reflection, near and far,/For a mirror will show who you really are." The party is fantastic until a goblin spots the real Twitchy in a mirror, and only her own magic spell saves her from becoming lizard pie. Briticisms (e.g, "toad in the hole," "beetles and mash") add to the story's humor. The colorful illustrations, featuring six strategically placed holograms and cutouts, are full of lively asides and fearsome, but not scary, creatures. An enjoyable addition.
